THE FUTURE OF SUNAPEE IS YOURS TO DETERMINE
After the ‘Sunapee Community Design Charrette’ in April, 2024, the ‘Forward Sunapee Steering Committee’ (FSSC) was created to construct a method to obtain input from Sunapee residents and Sunapee business owners on the seven key areas identified by the Charrette. Following is the introduction to this process. Your participation is requested on October 28th, 2024 to learn more and sign-up for one of the ‘Sunapee Seven Committees’.
WHO: Citizens of Sunapee – We NEED YOU! The only qualification is that you are a resident, property or business owner in Sunapee, NH. What you bring to the table is your passion for your community and town. If you bring additional skills, wonderful – life experience brings a wealth of insight and contributory knowledge. When we say, we want YOU, we mean YOU!
WHAT: Depending on your interests, vision for Sunapee, or curiosity, you can sign up and participate in one committee. Each committee will have 8 members plus a moderator from the FSSC. The charter of the committee is to creatively and collaboratively explore the recommendations made by the Charrette Report. The expected commitment is one meeting a month over the next year. Some committees may have warrant articles for the March 2026 Sunapee Ballot which are due in September 2025.
The ‘Sunapee Seven Committees’ include:
- Overall Connectivity: Connections to, and around, the Sunapee Harbor area. These connections, or lack thereof, play an important role in the economic development of the area.
- Route 11 Design: Increase safety and connectivity for pedestrians, bikes, and vehicles.
- Riverwalk Trail & Harbor Tree Improvements: What the trail should be, naming of the trail (Sugar River Heritage Trail?), what message it should communicate, and how to best tell this story through placemaking, signage, and trail definition.
- Housing: Task force to work on a broader study of housing needs in Sunapee. Maintain the “quaint New England” feel while also allowing for different housing types and price points.
- Planning & Zoning: Dimensional issues, process issues and incentives, and the preservation district.
- Economic Development: Defining a vision, planning, existing resources, wayfinding, gateway enhancement and underutilized spaces.
- Harbor Reconfiguration: Sunapee Harbor is potentially the most valuable land in the Town of Sunapee.
